Mayapple – Podophyllum peltatum
A Minnesota native plant.
Grows: 12-24” tall, likes moist soil in dappled shade, but will tolerate dry soil.
Light Requirements: Half Sun / Half Shade, Full Shade
Flower Color: White
Flower Size: Flowers are showy but usually hidden by the leaves. Each flower gives way to an edible, fleshy, greenish fruit which turn golden when ripe.
Bloom Time: Early to late spring
Planting Depth: Plant so that the top of the root is 1″ below the soil line.
Foliage: Plant has 1 or 2 umbrella-like, pale green leaves that can reach 12″ in diameter. Plants with only one leaf will not flower. Mayapple foliage may go dormant in summer (foliage disappears).
